Having recently inherited a Cape Cod style home which took a lot of damage in Hurricane Ike, my wife and I are still considering what to do with it… There’s some structural damage to the garage which will have to be attended to, this wasn’t helped any by the people behind us who hit the roof with a tree they were felling. The roof of the home will need redone, siding and windows will need replaced. The building also needs leveled. I just wonder sometimes whether it is worth the expense since we could build a new home instead. I’d like to believe it was worth doing, to restore a 1940’s era home. What I have found most frustrating is the large amount of builders in Houston who never seem to get back to you when you ask for a quote on anything. Any helpful thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Tom’s Answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Charlie: I’m on that.
Tom: Well, if we’re talking just money, it’s usually cheaper to build new than trying to restore a home of that age. If you want to restore the home of that age, you need to find the right people to do it. Most people don’t have the skills to do it. You’re looking for someone that specializes in restoration. There’s not a lot in Houston because there’s not a lot of old home in Houston; it’s a fairly new city. That’s what you have to think about. Is it money or is it historical aspect of the house? Because it’s going to cost more to put that thing back together.
Charlie: It sure will but won’t it stand out if he does?
Tom: Maybe.
Charlie: [Inaudible 00:32] cool looking house.
Tom: It depends what the neighborhood’s like.
Charlie: True.
Tom: Then you got a lot of different things.
Charlie: I get that.
Tom: Yeah. If it points in the right direction and you want to restore it, you just got to find the right people.
