I am building a new home in Tomball. The builder recently poured the slab about a week ago. When I checked on the progress yesterday I noticed a crack in two places that go from the dirt up the foundation beam and across the floor to the other side and back down to the dirt. One is towards the front of the house and runs from the left side of the house, through the entry, through the garage and out to the other side. The other runs from the left side of the house in the back, throught the living room and all the way through the master bedroom and bath and out the right side of the house. I have seen hairline cracks before and understand that to be normal but this concerns me to see these seperate cracks start from the dirt on one side of the house and continue all the way across the house to the dirt on the other side. Should I be concerned about this?

Tom: Probably not and if they used enough rebar like they’re supposed to it’s an engineered slab then all it is, is shrinkage cracks because they’re so straight and moving very uniformly I don’t think you’re going to have any problems at all. No one can know until time tells the dirty tail but at this point I would have to say take pictures of it and don’t worry about it and just see if you can move on. Remember if there’s enough steel in there you’ll always get cracks because steel and concrete expand and contract at different rates.
