Most Economical Water Heater Setup

My house is all electric and I have 2 tank type hot water heaters. One for the kitchen and washing machine and one for my 2 bathrooms on the other side of the house.

That’s the way it was when I bought it. Would it be more economical to replace each heater with an electric tankless heater or just 1 for the whole house? Thanks for your time.

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: It sounds like the pipes are zoned, so you’re probably not going to be able to do one for the whole house, and an on-demand electric water heater for the whole house…that puts a lot of strain on the water heater.  It depends how much you have.  The expense of installing it with all the new electrical lines and stuff can get quite pricey.  I have a feeling you probably should just stick with what you have.  Sometimes when it was designed that way, that’s the way it is.  If you were going to do on-demand water heaters, you would need two, one to replace each water tank.  They could be smaller and handle the load.  I have them in my house.  They work great.  I don’t think you’d want to do one on that.
