Our A/C unit does not properly cool our 2100 SF home in the summer. I had the thermostat set @ 75 degrees this morning and did not change it. The temp in the home is 80 degrees right now. Two HVAC professionals have told us that it was too small – only 2 tons. The unit was in the home when we purchased it in 2008. Do we need a larger unit?

Tom: I think you do need a larger one. Yeah, it’s too small and that’s a classic example of people spending a lot of money to be uncomfortable in the summer because the units they put in their home were too small. It has to be designed to handle the summer and energy efficiency is not having a smaller unit, it’s having the best comfort for the lowest price. It’s time for them to do that. Now, if they want to invest in maybe a an additional ductless split system instead of redoing the whole other system, they could do that too, but somehow you need more capacity when it’s hot out. .
