Tom, I am getting very paranoid about companies who say they are good and then do a poor job. I try to do my due care and diligence by looking at Angie’s List, check the BBB, and look at the “Best Picks Reports”, etc. But, I still get ripped off or get inferior work. I am looking at replacing damaged dry wall that was created from a roof leak. Can you tell me if you trust anyone to do a good job dry walling? I am also looking at replacing flooring and doing carpentry work. Do you have anyone around that you trust? Please help me!

Tom: Rudy’s Quality Painting. Every company is going to tell you they’re good, and you look at all these reviews. They’re filtered and you get some whack jobs that just hate everybody so they put really bad ones out with good companies. Some people you just can’t please, so be careful when you read all that stuff. Charlie probably knows more about that than I do. I don’t read those kind of things, but as far fixing your Sheetrock, I know Rudy will do a good job because he’s done a great job for I don’t how many people including myself and for Charlie here too. I’m sure you can give him a rave endorsement also.
Charlie: I’d go with your 5 steps on how you recommend somebody. You make sure they’ve been in business awhile. You make sure they have a real business address. You make sure they’ve got good credit. You check their references.
Tom: You can do all that. With the smaller guys like Rudy, you don’t have to go that far. If you’re hiring a builder then you have to get into it a little more deeper, but you certainly don’t want a guy in a pickup that’s going to make a lot of promises and ask for money down and then never shows up.
