ARS is indicating there is a leak in my evaporator coil. They stated it will be covered by my home warranty AHS but that they won’t be able to install the new coil without installing a new drip pan and drain piping which will cost $967 out of pocket.
The technician will not answer if my current drain pan is damaged only that they are not trained on how to install a new coil without replacing the drop pan and piping. Is this normal? Insurance will pay for the pan and piping if there is current damage but he would not respond to this question.

Tom’s Answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: Well yeah, I don’t understand where the warranty part is.
Charlie: Right exactly. We’ll replace the five dollar part, but this thousand dollar part, that’s you.
Tom: No, I understand, I – I don’t know how to answer that.
Charlie: The technician will not answer if the current drain pan is damaged, only that they’re not trained on how to install the coil without replacing the drop pan and piping. Is this normal?
Tom: No. I’m not sure what… this is confusing.
Charlie: What’s she saying is that the coil has to be replaced and that’s covered.
Tom: And I understand that.
Charlie: But the pan and the pipe aren’t and they’re saying, and they, and she says, well okay.
Tom: But he says he’s not trained on how to do it without doing the pan too, which doesn’t make any sense.
Charlie: Well, I’m thinking, you know …
Tom: No, it’s… I hate to point fingers and I don’t, I haven’t talked to the tech, but I would probably get a different answer from him. If it was me.
Charlie: Right.
Tom: Like, what are you just lying to me?
Charlie: Okay. La, la, la, be nice, okay?
Tom: I know, I know …
Charlie: Be sweet.
Tom: I don’t have to say that I feel sorry for people, that’s why were here.
Charlie: We mean it in the spirit of Christian love.
Tom: I think she should talk to somebody else.
Charlie: Right, get a second opinion.
Tom: Absolutely.
Charlie: Absolutely.
Tom: Even if you have to pay like 70 bucks or something, have them just come out for gas and time.
Charlie: Right, there you have it.
Tom: How about Absolute Comfort Air, 49.99 for 19 point check up on my mom’s air conditioner and then they can give her some ideas. Charlie: There you have it. And that is great advice because she goes, on here, I didn’t get to the end of this where she says, the insurance will pay for the pan, but if there’s current damage. But he would not respond to the question about whether there’s damage or not.
Tom: No, I just don’t like the whole thing …
Charlie: So, it’s… sound like it’s [inaudible] …
Tom: …is uncomfortable.
Charlie: Yeah. It’s sounding jickey [ph].
Tom: Snarky. I use that word a lot, that’s good.
Charlie: Yeah. Alright.
