When trying to improve my home’s temperature in the summer months, I think about windows, insulation, radiant barrier, and new A/C. Is there something I am missing?
Is there a preferred order to add to the house that will give me the best bang for my buck?

Listen to Tom’s answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: For summertime, radiant barrier would be number one. Insulation. Number two, that would help you in the wintertime also, but not as much in the summer as the winter, believe it or not. And then you can go and do all the other things. But radiant barrier is probably the first thing I would do right now for summertime heat barrier, to keep the heat from going in the house.
Charlie: Sure. And UAC if he has a lot of money laying around.
Tom: You have AC. You got solar screens. I mean, there’s a lot of things. But you say what order? What’s the most important? If you don’t have a radiant barrier, you’re – you can do all the other things and you’re just going to be missing the game.
Charlie: And that’s something he didn’t have on the list, was the solar screens and we had the video –
Tom: Yeah. No, absolutely.
Charlie: I mean that’s something to consider, especially –
Tom: And not every window needs it but some do.
Charlie: On those west-facings, especially, right?
Tom: You bet.
