Hello Tom,
I have a Longhorn ranch near Wallis, Texas that has been passed down from my grandfather. About 10 years ago we had Bevo there for a day while UT was playing U of H, and I’m betting the prominently Aggie town of East Bernard would have loved to have known that!
I have a pier and beam barn there that was built anywhere from the 40’s to the 50’s. The barn has tin on all sides along with a tin roof. The tin on the sides is in excellent shape, however the tin roof is in bad shape. My dad use to have someone come out and spray a silver paint treatment in years past. This year I have noticed many leaks from pin holes to quarter size holes. I went up on the roof and discovered a lot of pieces on the overlay have rusted to dust, so there is no question in my mind a new roof is in order. in looking at the wood structure, all the wood looks real solid!
I am looking for a company who not only has knowledge in installing a new tin roof, but does install tin roofs on a regular basis. My concern would be hiring a roofing company who has done none or few tin roofs. In watching videos, looks like the most important part is installing the screws just right to expand the washer to prevent leaks.
Last question, once installed and given there are no trees around the barn, would I still need to have it painted with the silver paint stuff? What is that silver paint called?
Thanks! Enjoy your show!
Mark
Tom: We won’t call them tin anymore, and they really weren’t tin, but most of the roofs today that will look like that you can still get the same look. It’s made out of a Galvalume material which is basically a combination of galvanized and aluminum, which is nice. It will last a …
Charlie: Hey, I see what they did there.
Tom: … long, long time. They made a nice marriage out of the deal. It lasts a long time and you probably won’t have to redo it again. Ideal Roofing has done many metal roofs for me and you can get all kinds of different configurations and colors if you want to dress it up. They’re very experienced with metal roofing and they can handle it.
