Charlie: Leslie in Atascocita says “My question is should I replace my 10-year-old AC unit with a new unit or just have someone redo the coils? They’re starting to leak and freeze up on us, and I don’t have the funds for a new one at the moment, so I was looking to save some money. Is this a legitimate option?”

Tom: I think when she says coil she means the evaporator coil and if it has gone bad, just replace it. That condensing unit will have another 10 years, if you take care of it, of life, so don’t put the whole expense out on a new unit. 10 years is maybe half, maybe half it’s life, probably less than half, but a lot of people don’t go more than 20 years. Anyway, just go ahead, new evaporator coil, get it all put back together, and just take care of it. Don’t miss your yearly checkups please.
