Tom, where do these builders come from? I’ve told you before how they put in only one return air, and tell me that’s all I need.
I recently checked out the filter for my a/c. It was a paper thin filter, a 99 cent one. I asked the construction man why such a cheap filter in this home? He said that’s all I need in this home. It’s 1720 sq.ft.
I’ve heard from you and others how I need a pleated filter.
The air condition company should know better. All I can think is they want to save money.
Every answer they give isn’t what I hear on your show. The man said I didn’t need a media filter, it would just cost me more money. He said my 99 cent filter is fine.
See you later.

Tom: If you talk to any air conditioning contractor, not a builder, you will get a lot different answer than he’s getting from a builder who is just building a home to the specifications they’re given. That’s what you get. If you want a pleated filter after you buy the home, and you want to upgrade, you can certainly do that on your own. I think it should have more air returns, and I think it should have a media filter is my best guess.
Charlie: I was just going; that’s the other thing he says in his letter here. He says that an AC guy said he didn’t need a media filter.
Tom: That’s fine, but everybody who puts them in today uses media filters. That’s the industry standard right now, so I’m not sure. The reason we use media filters, the biggest reason, is we have more than one air return. Instead of having six filters in a house to switch, you only have one. You can have three, four, five different air returns, smaller, separated throughout the house to make it a more comfortable home.
Charlie: Not have to go around changing the filters.
Tom: How many times a year do we get questions; my one room’s hot and one room’s cold. My cathedral ceiling room is always hot, and my bedroom’s freezing. It’s because there’s not enough mixture of air throughout the house, especially as houses get bigger. More return airs helps solve that problem.
