We just moved into a new home in Sugar Land (Riverstone – south side of SH-6). What kind of miniature fruit trees should we plant (9 foot height restriction within powerline easement)? Also, what kind of shade trees should we plant in the unrestricted part of the yard, and how far should the trees be from the house?

Tom’s Answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: Well, you can actually trim the trees for the beginning years. Meyer lemon would be a good one. You can keep them trimmed like a big bush and they will really produce.
Charlie: We’ve got those.
Tom: I’ve got several. You can get into the different types of kumquats, limequats, cumquats. There’s a bunch of them and they can be kept small even in pots too. There are some citrus trees you can do, but if you’re going to get into oranges, apples, peaches or something like that, those trees will get quite big. If you want some help and if you’re in the northwest side of town, at least, RCW Nurseries have all the fruit trees and they can guide you down the right path.
Charlie: Well, he’s in Sugarland, but I think it would be worth the drive up there, because they’d take of it.
Tom: I buy all my fruit trees from them, so I’ve had great luck with mine.
