Podcast: Play in new window
Charlie: Deidre has come to us postage free from Acres Homes. She wants to know, “Are we being charged by the electric company whether or not the thermostat is set to say eighty and rarely kicks on?”
Tom: Yes. If you use electricity, you get charged. You always have your standard charges like, the delivery charge would be one. That’s around ten bucks or so. You have your Centerpoint’s, which is around ninety dollars a home. You have your electricity usage. If something is on, that meter turns, they don’t really turn anymore. Now they have digital but you pay.
Charlie: The bigger question is I think is say we’re coming into winter, if I set it at a cooler temperature, how much will that impact the electric rate if I’m using the furnace less?
Tom: The old rule was, for every degree you turn down it lessons your … This is just for cooling or heating costs. We’re not talking about lights and everything else.
Charlie: Probably more about cooling than heating since the heating is probably gas.
Tom: Right. It’s ten percent of the temperature before you but there’s all this extrapolations with numbers. Instead of boring people, if you use less you’ll pay less. That’s it. Can we keep it simple? Sunday morning.
Charlie: That’s thirty years of experience talking there boys and girls. Use less you’ll pay less.
Tom: Yeah. Let’s not extrapolate.
Charlie: Just in case you have any question about it. If you use more …
Tom: You pay more.
Charlie: There it is.
