5 steps to a beautiful spring garden

A long winter can leave your home garden lifeless and bland. Revive your roses and bring back the lively blooms in time for spring with tips from RCW Nurseries’ Mary Cummings. Watch as she shows Tom five easy steps to breath life back into your garden.

Mary, how does your garden grow?

At this time of year, it’s looking pretty sad, but there’s always hope for spring.

Where do we start?

Go through your yard and make some hard decisions about things you want to keep and other things that you want to let go.

The second step is preparing the bed for any new things you’re going to install. You want to add compost or black humus.

The next step is going to be adding some pre-emergent herbicide that will help keep you from having to weed so much next spring.

Once you’ve decided what you want to put in, you can either pant by seed– timing is everything with seeds– or pick out some new plants in the nursery.

Make sure that your beds are nicely mulched. If you just mulched this past fall, you can freshen up the mulch just by turning it over and raking it out.

And then you should just be able to water and go.

What are our choices in new plants?

At this time of year, you want to make decisions about planting fruit trees. The best selection is right now. Citrus are always super easy to do, as you know, Tom. Blueberries are awesome and real easy to put in. You can still always plant shade and ornamental trees right now.

For spring time, if you have shady spots, you can still plant cyclamen. They will last until it starts getting real hot. Pretty soon we’ll be getting things like begonias, impatiens.

Breathe life back into your garden with these helpful tips from Mary. And watch your garden grow.
