Charlie: Carol up in Willowbrook writes to us that she has to have her kitchen cabinets refinished on. They are about 15 years old, maple, but the polyurethane finishes yellowed and she’s wondering tips on this. Is this a Do-It-Yourself or should she bring somebody in?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: Oh I’d bring somebody in. I don’t know if they can even strip it down, you’d have to look at it. Urethane is a horrible thing to use. Especially the cheaper ones, the water-base, because they will yellow especially with lack of light. I’d probably call somebody like Rudy(Quality Paint) in to get an assessment first and then decide. Or if it’s so bad that he can’t even refinish them, then you go to TriFection and make another step up where they can reskin the cabinets and then build new drawer fronts, and then stain it with a better quality finish that won’t yellow on her, and give her that real pristine brand new look.
